If I have an interface on a 3500XL which is up/up, but there is no
dynamic MAC address associated with the port, how do I find out what
is connected to that port ?
On this switch, there are 28 ports up but only 13 addresses in the MAC
table.

So the other ones are there asserting the proper signals, but have timed
out due to inactivity. Powercycle the 3500XL and monitor the ARP table more
carefully.

Or, less disruptively, do a ping sweep of the subnet(s) on the
switch.
